Services
Norwich-based Howie Architects is a small, friendly practice, headed up by Alastair Howie.
Alastair has more than 30 years' experience as an architect and has worked across a range of sectors, including domestic, commercial and retail.
His hands-on approach to every single job, no matter what the size or budget, means he can often take on projects where larger practices are unable to.
He believes communication is the key to a successful outcome and, as such, listens carefully to his clients so he can respond efficiently to their requirements.
Howie Architects specialises in residential and domestic extensions and conversions.
The practice offers clients the necessary capabilities and experience to see a project through from inception right through to design, planning, building regulations and construction.
Alastair uses AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, Photoshop and 3D software, together with hand-drawn sketches, to communicate his vision to the client, planning authority and building team with clarity.
The first stage is to arrange to meet at a suitable date and time to discuss your project.
We can advise you on whether planning permission is required for your particular project.
If you decide to go ahead then planning submission and liaison with the local authority department or relevant organisation is part of the service we offer.
Certain types of development and extension which comply with particular conditions are "deemed consent" and therefore do not require full planning permission.
It is usually sensible in this situation to apply to the local authority for a lawful development certificate.
With the ever-changing requirements of modern living, soaring moving costs and short supply of property, home extensions have become increasingly popular.
In the 21st century, many of us require very different kinds of family living space than are provided by our often traditionally designed homes.
Kitchens, for example, have become more than places to simply store and prepare food - today they are often the most important social spaces in our homes.
Yet, at the same time, more of us are now also working longer hours from home so in addition to a computer space in the corner, we may also require a separate study or home office.
Converting a building to become your home gives the opportunity to create a unique end result that reflects the character and previous use of the original building.
Under-used space like a loft, garage or a cellar can be converted to create added habitable areas in the main home as a study, games room, cinema room, gym or simply an added bedroom and en suite.
Entire building conversions, however, take the whole notion even further and can yield even more imaginative results.
Old barns, churches, former pubs, hospitals, former military structures and water towers can become the most magnificent family homes.
