Business Details
We are Harrington's Architecture & Design, an East Anglian architectural consultancy established in 2005 and led by Ian Harrington, a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists since 1978. With over four decades of experience in private practice architecture, we bring unparalleled expertise to every project we undertake. We specialise in residential design, including individual house design, conversions, remodelling, and extensions, consistently delivering successful concept designs illustrated by hand drawings. Our consultative approach ensures we fully understand the needs of both our clients and their properties before producing tailored schemes. We have cultivated sound working relationships with Planning Officers and Building Conservation Officers across Kent, Essex, Suffolk, and East Herts.
Our professional standards are reflected in our contributions to the Conservation in Essex guide to extending historic buildings. We operate within a trusted network of specialists in Planning Law, Building Regulations, Structural Engineering, and Interior Design to offer a multi-disciplined service. Whether clients require an hourly consultancy or a fixed fee arrangement, we tailor our services to suit individual requirements. Our proven reputation is built on decades of satisfied private clients and successful planning and listed building consents.

We produce successful concept designs illustrated by detailed hand drawings.
Planning and Listed Building Consents
We advise on and obtain difficult planning and listed building consents on behalf of private clients throughout East Anglia and the Home Counties. Our established relationships with Planning and Building Conservation Officers streamline the application process. We also manage planning appeals when required.
Extensions and Improvements
We design extensions and improvements that transform properties into beautiful, functional family homes. Our expertise covers ground floor annexes, Georgian house extensions, and farm house developments. Every project benefits from our rigorous feasibility studies and detailed working drawings.
Measured Site and Building Surveys
We conduct precise measured site and building surveys to provide the accurate foundation for all subsequent design work. These surveys inform our feasibility studies and planning research, ensuring informed decision-making. Clients receive thorough documentation suitable for detailed architectural design development.
Contract Supervision and Site Inspection
We provide comprehensive contract supervision and site inspection services throughout the construction phase of every project. Our role includes obtaining building contract tenders and specialist quotations, alongside full architectural detailing and specification. This ensures professional standards are maintained from conception to completion.
