Services
The original planning approval was gained by Henry J Lyons architects.
As delivery architects, we also entered into a planning exercise to redesign the building to meet the requirements of the Clayton Hotel brand.
The site is located on the corner of Charlemont Mall and Charlemont Street and forms part of a vista which terminates at the canal.
This new development has been designed to integrate into and reflect the environment of the surrounding area.
This prominent building creates a superb 4-star hotel that responds sensitively to the historic context.
Our challenge was to design a collection of buildings for a city centre infill site to deliver 575 student accommodation units, a 265 bedroom hotel, retail space, external amenity space plus basement car parking and servicing.
Client aspirations had to be balanced against the fact that the site was in the heart of Newcastle's conservation area and was surrounded by important heritage assets.
The three major streets that the infill building was to occupy presented an evolution of styles from restrained Georgian on Clayton Street, across Newgate Street (a mixture of styles) through to the Victorian ornate grandeur of Grainger Street.
An exposed 1.85 hectare greenfield site located south-east of Aberdeen Airport would become the location for a 4-Star Crowne Plaza Hotel and 3-Star Holiday Inn Express with bars, restaurants and conference facilities.
The hotel footprints are rectangular, and their facades are orientated parallel to the south and west boundaries.
This arrangement provides additional shelter from the Scottish weather and allows the main entrance facades to open onto the centre of the site and to be served from the main car-park/ drop-off point.
